The urban environment quality is of vital importance as the majority of people now live in cities. Due to the continuous urbanisation and industrialisation in many parts of the world, metals are continuously emitted into the terrestrial environment and pose a great threat on human health. An extensive survey was conducted in the highly urbanised and commercialised Hong Kong Island area (80.3 km2) of Hong Kong using a systematic sampling strategy of five soil samples per km2 in urban areas and two samples per km2 in the suburban and country park sites (0-15 cm). The analytical results indicated that the surface soils in urban and suburban areas are enriched with metals, such as Cu, Pb, and Zn. The Pb concentration in the urban soils was found to exceed the Dutch target value. The statistical analyses using principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) showed distinctly different associations among trace metals and the major elements (Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn) in the urban, suburban, and country park soils. Soil pollution maps of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the surface soils were produced based on geographical information system (GIS) technology. The hot-spot areas of metal contamination were mainly concentrated in the northern and western parts of Hong Kong Island, and closely related to high traffic conditions. The Pb isotopic composition of the urban, suburban, and country park soils showed that vehicular emissions were the major anthropogenic sources for Pb. The 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb ratios in soils decreased as Pb concentrations increased in a polynomial line (degree=2).  相似文献

Simultaneous measurement of blood flow velocity (BFV) in the middle cerebral arteries was achieved by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in 36 right-handed volunteers who were instructed to identify the emotion conveyed by prosody or semantics of a number of sentences. The tasks were performed under 2 levels of interference: neutral versus discordant affective value of the modality that had to be ignored. A multivariate analysis of variance showed a significant bilateral increase in BFV during the discordant conditions reflecting increased attentional demand. A significant left-hemispheric lateralization of BFV was observed as emotional semantics were labeled. When attention was shifted to affective prosody, the lateralization effect disappeared as a result of a marked increase in right-hemispheric BFV. A mutant of papain, where an inter-domain hydrogen bond betweenthe side chain hydroxyl group of a serine residue at position176 and the side chain carbonyl oxygen of a glutamine residueat position 19 has been removed by site-directed mutagenesis,has been produced and characterized kinetically. The mutationof Ser176 to an alanine has only a small effect on the kineticparameters, the kcat/Km for hydrolysis of CBZ-Phe-Arg-MCA bythe Serl76Ala enzyme being of 8.1 x 104 /M/s compared with 1.2x 105 /M/s for papain. Serine 176 is therefore not essentialfor the catalytic functioning of papain, even though this residueis conserved in all cysteine proteases sequenced. The pH-activityprofiles were shown to be narrower in the mutant enzyme by upto 1 pH unit at high ionic strength. This result is interpretedto indicate that replacing Ser 176 by an alanine destabilizesthe thiolate—imidazolium form of the catalytic site Cys25-Hisl59residues of papain. Possible explanations for that effect aregiven and the role of a serine residue at position 176 in papainis discussed.  相似文献

The potential exists for human exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other contaminants originating from abandoned Mid-Canada Radar Line (MCRL) sites in sub-arctic Canada. We examined patterns of differences with respect to body burden of organochlorines (lipid-adjusted) between residents of the Ontario First Nations of Fort Albany (the site of MCRL Site 050) and Kashechewan (no radar base) and Hamilton (an industrial, southern Ontario community) to assess whether the presence of Site 050 influenced organochlorine body burden with respect to the people of Fort Albany. PCBs (Aroclor 1260 and summation operator14 PCBs congeners [CBs]) and DDE in the plasma of Fort Albany and Kashechewan subjects were elevated relative to Hamilton participants. PCB and DDE-plasma levels in First Nation women were of comparable magnitude to those reported for Inuit women living in the west/central Northwest Territories. Significantly lower DDE/DDT ratios observed for Fort Albany indicates exposure to higher levels of DDT compared to Kashechewan. The probable source of DDT exposure for Fort Albany people is the DDT-contaminated soil surrounding buildings of Site 050. The results of the correspondence analysis (CA) indicated that people from Hamilton had relatively higher pesticides and lower CB body burdens, while people from Fort Albany and Kashechewan exhibited relatively higher CBs and lower pesticide levels (CA-1). The separation of Fort Albany and Kashechewan from Hamilton was also clear using questionnaire data (i.e., plotting dietary principal component [PC]-1 scores against PC-2); PC-1 was correlated with the consumption of a traditional diet. Separation of Kashechewan and Albany residents occurred because the people of Kashechewan ate more traditional meats and consumed shorebirds. Only one significant relationship was found between PC analysis and contaminant loadings; PC-1 versus CA-3 for Kashechewan. The presence of Site 050 on Anderson Island appears to have influenced organochlorine body burden of the people of Fort Albany. ANCOVA results revealed that it was not activity on Anderson Island that was important, but activity on Site 050 was the influential variable. When these results are considered with the DDE/DDT ratio data and the CB 187 results (Fort Albany and Kashechewan residents differed significantly), the findings are suggestive that Site 050 did influence organochlorine body burden of people from Fort Albany.  相似文献

This study systematically examined the effects of impression management biases on the reporting of dyadic relationship information. In an anonymous mail survey, 196 participants (101 women, 95 men) in marital or cohabiting relationships completed a measure of impression management and several relationship measures. Analyses indicated that impression management biases did not affect women's self-reports. Among men, impression management biases were significantly associated with many of their reports about their relationships. However, statistically controlling for these biases did not reduce the magnitude of correlations between measures of marital quality and the other relationship measures. Furthermore, partners' agreement about observable aspects of their relationship did not change when the influences of these biases were statistically removed. The authors conclude that researchers can generally trust in the veridicality of anonymous self-report data about commonplace aspects of marriage. Relighting algorithms make it possible to take a model of a real-world scene and virtually modify its lighting. Unlike other methods that require controlled conditions, we introduce a new radiance capture method that allows the user to capture parts of the scene under different lighting conditions. A novel calibration method is presented that finds the positions of reflective spheres and their mathematically accurate projection onto the scene geometry. The resulting radiance distribution is used to estimate a diffuse reflectance for each object, computed coherently using the appropriate light probe image. Finally, the scene is relit using a novel illumination pattern.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel algorithm for hierarchical random accessible mesh decompression. Our approach progressively decompresses the requested parts of a mesh without decoding less interesting parts. Previous approaches divided a mesh into independently compressed charts and a base coarse mesh. We propose a novel hierarchical representation of the mesh. We build this representation by using a boundary-based approach to recursively split the mesh in two parts, under the constraint that any of the two resulting submeshes should be reconstructible independently.
In addition to this decomposition technique, we introduce the concepts of opposite vertex and context dependant numbering . This enables us to achieve seemingly better compression ratios than previous work on quad and higher degree polygonal meshes. Our coder uses about 3 bits per polygon for connectivity and 14 bits per vertex for geometry using 12 bits quantification.  相似文献

Quorum quenching lactonases are enzymes capable of hydrolyzing lactones, including N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). AHLs are molecules known as signals in bacterial communication dubbed quorum sensing. Bacterial signal disruption by lactonases was previously reported to inhibit behavior regulated by quorum sensing, such as the expression of virulence factors and the formation of biofilms. Herein, we report the enzymatic and structural characterization of a novel lactonase representative from the metallo-β-lactamase superfamily, dubbed GcL. GcL is a broad spectrum and highly proficient lactonase, with kcat/KM values in the range of 104 to 106 m −1 s−1. Analysis of free GcL structures and in complex with AHL substrates of different acyl chain length, namely, C4-AHL and 3-oxo-C12-AHL, allowed their respective binding modes to be elucidated. Structures reveal three subsites in the binding crevice: 1) the small subsite where chemistry is performed on the lactone ring; 2) a hydrophobic ring that accommodates the amide group of AHLs and small acyl chains; and 3) the outer, hydrophilic subsite that extends to the protein surface. Unexpectedly, the absence of structural accommodation for long substrate acyl chains seems to relate to the broad substrate specificity of the enzyme.  相似文献
